In order to help give you a better perspective, we have included a list of the most frequently asked questions about Theta Xi. Parents can also check out our parents page.
Why Go Greek?
Beyond just Theta Xi, UCLA’s greek system is a great place where members can cultivate friendships and life-changing experiences. Theta Xi works extensively with inter-greek organizations such as Green The Greeks and the Inter Fraternity Council to help promote a positive image of the greek system.
Why Theta Xi?
Our brothers are more than just "frat guys." We have brothers from all walks of life, interested in all different things, we feel that Theta Xi is the perfect place to foster individuality while promoting unity. Theta Xi is constantly striving to ensure that the world sees fraternities as more than just the typical “Animal House.” While social events are an integral part of our calendar, Theta Xi focuses on so much more. Through our extensive work with Habitat for Humanity and local sorority philanthropies, our chapter of Theta Xi was awarded first place in local community service by our national headquarters. For us, a fraternity is more than just a social club; it’s a place to cultivate friendships, help the community, and ultimately grow as a man.

What About Grades?
Many college students (and parents) worry about their grades slipping when they join a fraternity, however this is not the case! The average GPA of fraternity men at UCLA is well above the all men’s average, and Theta Xi’s is well above that! Boasting a 3.45 average GPA, we are proud to have the second highest GPA on the row.
How does the Rush Process Work?
During rush week, all of the fraternities will be hosting events at their houses for prospective members to attend. We encourage you to check out other fraternities as well to see if Theta Xi is the right fit for you. If you attend one or more rush events and demonstrate that you would make a good member of the house, brothers will extend a bid of membership to you, to which you can accept or decline (you will have several days to make your decision if you so choose). After rush week, those men who have accepted bids will be associated into the fraternity as associate members. An associate member is different from a “pledge” in that he is not of lower status than the brothers; he is an equal. During your associate period, you will have all the same rights as initiated brothers, except that you will not be giving access to our fraternity secrets or voting privileges. At the end of your associate period (which usually lasts about seven weeks), the brothers will then vote on your initiation and you will be initiated as a brother.
What happens when I join a Fraternity? Is it like in the movies?
"Animal House" and more recently, "Old School" were very funny movies, but they were extremely bad for the image of fraternities. Furthermore, some fraternity chapters have actually tried to live up to the poor image that these movies promoted, in the hope that this will attract college students to join. Theta Xi is not one of these chapters, and we are actively working to restore the reputation of college fraternities as valuable pillars of the community among the general public.
When you join Theta Xi, you will never be hazed, mistreated, embarrassed, forced to consume alcohol, perform meaningless tasks, or in any other way be treated as anything less than a friend and brother. However, you may be asked, and will have the opportunity to: manage a budget, plan a community service project, represent yourself and your fellow students to the University, or even help direct the operations of the national organization! The difference is that we will never ask you to do anything unless the brothers are doing the same thing, working alongside and supporting you the entire time. Theta Xi provides you with leadership opportunities to enhance your personal development, and lets you learn from other brothers who have endured the same challenges.

What will my dues money be spent on?
Our operating budget is carefully prepared each year to provide the most amount of money possible toward events that do not include alcohol. Our philanthropies, leadership workshops, and outdoor events give us a wide and unique range of college experiences we would otherwise not have had. Simply put, it would be a shame to not take advantage of the opportunities afforded to us by living in Southern California.
Will I be hazed?
Absolutely not! Theta Xi has a firm commitment against hazing. We believe it is important to treat all of our members equally. While associate members will not be allowed to vote in ritual meetings and do not learn the secret ritual, they have every other right brothers have, including freedom from hazing.
What is an associate member?
An associate member is a man who has accepted a bid to join our fraternity and has been pinned in the associate member ceremony. This ceremony is the first step in a seven week process designed to get new men educated on the ideals, values, and history of the Theta Xi Fraternity, as well as provide numerous opportunities for personal development and bonding with the brotherhood. Associate members do not know the ritual of the Theta Xi Fraternity as they are not initiated members. For that same reason, they are not allowed to attend ritual meetings and cannot vote on issues coming before the chapter, though they do have the opportunity to make their views known to the general membership. Other than that, associates are welcome and encouraged to attend all chapter events.
